K-12 Teachers

As one LT participant commented, “It’s overwhelming to imagine that we are responsible for preparing students for jobs that we don’t even know exist—LT helps us, as educators, get a glimpse of what is out there.” LT program days offer teachers the opportunity to explore skills, attributes, and qualities businesses look for in employees and discuss best practices in business, such as employee motivation, and how these practices might be applied creatively in the classroom. In addition, LT program days provide teachers with small group breakout sessions, to network, sharing best practices, and explore collaborative opportunities.

Any K-12 educator from a public, private, or parochial school is eligible to apply to our programs. We have teachers of all grade levels and subject areas participate, and also have had educators participate who are more focused on school-wide or district-wide curriculum development or administrative work than classroom work. The application process is competitive since we are committed to class sizes no larger than 24 and balanced numbers of elementary, middle, and high school teacher participants from at least five different participating school districts.

Participants in Leadership Teacher’s yearlong program meet once a month from October through May at industry sites that demonstrate real-world applications of specific curriculum areas. The program begins with a teambuilding retreat in late October/early November followed by six daylong session days each focusing on a specific curriculum area, including Technology/Innovation, Math/Engineering, History/Social Studies, Science/Biotechnology, The Arts, and English/Communication. The final session day is free admission to the Real World Education Conference followed by a faciliated reflection workshop and a graduation ceremony for LT graduates. Participation in the retreat and all of the daylong sessions is mandatory.

Currently, Leadership Teacher offers educators four yearlong experiential professional development programs beginning in late October or early November and ending in May.

School Districts

School districts are interested in having their teachers see the “big” picture in education and recognize the need to provide an environment in which both teachers and students feel motivated and empowered. As one teacher wrote, “This program exposed us to the many opportunities for success that exist for our students [and we] learned of some of the unlimited resources available to help educators continue to grow professionally.” By building a professional network among educators and business and by increasing visibility of possible career paths, LT ultimately motivates students, getting them excited about these paths and appreciative of how classroom work provides real skills needed to be competitive in the working world.

School districts are encouraged to send at least one elementary, one middle, and one high school teacher to the yearlong program. We have found that when districts send teachers at all levels there is a common thread in service curriculum that develops. Many school districts elect to send teams of teachers from each level to encourage collaboration and team building within individual school buildings. According to one Assistant Superintendent, “Leadership Teacher did an outstanding job providing our three teacher participants with the opportunity to network with other teachers as well as the business community and to develop leadership skills.”

Currently, Leadership Teacher offers educators four yearlong experiential professional development programs beginning in late October or early November and ending in May.

LT Affiliate Steering Committee Members

Volunteer steering committees of business and educator co-chairs meet monthly to plan affiliate Leadership Teacher session days and provide feedback on program development. Steering committee members are community leaders from various disciplines who are aware of current issues, trends, and techniques in their area and are interested in creative connections with their community.

As one affiliate Steering Committee member commented, “The process of putting together our ‘day’ compelled us to think about the relationship between our professional skills and the needs of society at large and I can attest to the value of the program well beyond its intended benefit to participating educators.”

A moderate time commitment is required for participation on an affiliate Leadership Teacher steering committee. Steering committee members attend 11/2 hour monthly meetings from August through June in addition to planning and attending their particular session day.

LT Partnering Chambers of Commerce

Leadership Teacher coordinates affiliate programs in partnership with local Chambers of Commerce and other interested organizations. Partnering Chambers of Commerce assist in identifying community leadership for steering committees, provide program administration, email program participants reminder updates about upcoming session days, host monthly steering committee meetings, assist in the community promotion of the program, and copy and mail program material as needed.

According to one Chamber president, “Leadership Teacher opens educators eyes to the connection between what is taught in the classroom and what students need to know in the 21st century marketplace. This program gets to the heart of school-to-career like no other.”

Program Sponsors/Business Hosts/Presenters

As one participating business remarked, “Leadership Teacher builds a strong bridge between industry and the classroom to greatly improve understanding and excitement about career opportunities.” Business partners and program sponsors can contribute Leadership Teacher’s growing professional learning network by:
