Submitted By: eacahoon@hotmail.com Affiliate Group: Greater Concord NH, 2006/2007 School District: Alton, NH Grade Level: All Intended Audience: Students Curricular Connection: This assignment is used to have students assess what they determine to be the most important part of a selection of reading; it can be used for nearly all reading assignments across curriculum. Objectives: The objective of this assignment is to have students analyze what they think is an essential part of a reading selection. It can be used for a piece of literature, a textbook, an article, virtually any selection of reading. Context: I have borrowed this assignment from another English teacher I met while I was in the summer session of The Plymouth Writing Project. She borrowed this assignment from a science teacher at her school. The assignment allows students to assess what they think is important from what they read. Vocabulary: The word "pith" means the important or essential part, which is how the name of the assignment came to be. Teaching Suggestions: As a high-school English teacher, I introduce this assignment to my classes at the beginning of each semester. Students know the expectations of the assignment right away and know what to do each time we finish a reading selection. <-Back
